Air pollution worsens the peak in mortality linked to Covid-19

Air pollution is suffocating city dwellers in Europe. This is what emerges from the recent study published in the journal “Science of the Total Environment” and carried out by researchers from CNRS and Inserm on the relationship between exposure to pollution peaks and increased mortality from Covid. -19. The publication reveals that when air quality is poor, mortality linked to coronavirus is added to known health consequences such as respiratory diseases and heart attacks.

From 2020 to 2022, researchers analyzed the correlation to the level of exposure of residents to fine PM2.5 particles and deaths due to coronavirus in around thirty European cities and regions (Germany, Spain, France, Great Britain, Italy , The Netherlands). Results: mortality linked to Covid-19 is 5 times higher when PM2.5 pollution exceeds a level of 45 micrograms (μg.) per m3 in large cities including Paris. According to the study, this would lead to a 10% increase in mortality for each 1μg. additional m3 of fine particles.
